With a quick shake of head, she let her hair loose. The long, lustrous, light brown tresses, loosely brushing her shoulders, settled just above her hips. The rays of the setting sun falling obliquely on those wavy strands made them shine in a way that would lighten up embers of imagination in a poet’s mind to tie them up in a few romantic couplets’

Don’t you think you would love to have that description for your own hair? I would, for sure…

Long, thick, lustrous hair are, often, subject of dreamy descriptions in many verses of poetic / romantic writing. At the same time, to grow your hair to those lengths, fullness and luster and maintain them over time, requires more than an ordinary effort. So, let us see what it takes to get this done.

How to grow hair longer and faster

long natural hair

At the outset, kindly know that there are no short cuts or magical wands to grow and maintain long and beautiful hair. While the rate of growth of hair varies from person to person, on an average hair grows ½ an inch per month under normal conditions of health of scalp, environment of the place you live in, your personal health and genetics, etc.

However, an ideal condition does not exist in reality. Experts suggest that you can encourage hair growth by maintaining good health of hair through a well-balanced diet and proper hair care. Certain herbs in the nature can help your hair grow faster. Here are a few suggestions that can help you achieve a fast growth of hair.

Good diet – It is not just important to apply oils, creams, lotions to your hair but also what you eat. To grow your hair properly it is imperative to feed yourself with a proper and balanced diet. Nutritional deficiencies in your body very much affect the overall health of hair.

Hair is made up of protein, vitamins and minerals and it is essential that these are present in your body in sufficient amount to keep your body and your hair in good shape. A diet consisting of eggs, chicken, whole grains, milk, cheese; vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, spinach, carrot, lettuce, beetroot; and fruits like oranges, grapefruit; foods rich in omega 3 vitamins like walnuts, flax seeds, fish are very important for the hair to grow and remain in good health.

Trim those split ends, regularly – If your hair tends to split at the ends I would strongly suggest trimming your hair every 8 to 10 weeks to make sure that the split ends are removed. Split ends slow down the growth of hair and the hair looks dull. While regularly trimming to cut splits will curtail the length of hair, it will improve the health of hair and healthy hair can go for months without the need to trim.

Oil massage is good for hair – Using oil is very good for the hair, particularly if you have a dry scalp. Mix castor oil with coconut oil or almond oil in equal portions and heat it till it is lukewarm. Gently massage it into the scalp and leave it for approximately half hour. (Personally, I massage oil in my hair and leave it overnight). Wash it off with Shampoo and condition your hair after that. Do this procedure 1-2 times in a week. Massaging your scalp increases blood circulation and provides nourishment to the roots of hair.

Do not shampoo your hair everyday – The job of shampoo is to get rid of the dirt and product buildup from your hair but it can also take away essential natural oils that keep the hair soft and healthy. When you are trying to increase the length of your hair I would suggest minimal use of shampoo, maybe just once a week if you feel the need to do so. In case you need to wash your hair often just rinse it with water (cold or lukewarm) and follow it with conditioner. Excessive use of shampoo is not good for the health of hair as it makes hair dull and dry.

Vitamins & Supplements – Ensure that you get adequate natural nutrition which is important for hair growth. However, a balanced diet may not be enough to provide adequate vitamins and minerals. In such an instance, it can be beneficial to supplement your diet with additional enhancements that will help boost hair growth.

A variety of supplements like biotin and multivitamins that are best suited for aspirants of long and strong hair are available over the counter at any pharmacy or super market. Taking additional supplements can help, however, before starting on these supplements, it’s best to check with your doctor to make sure that you take the right amounts and that they won’t adversely react to any medication you’re currently taking.
